About The Show:"Filíocht na hArdteistiméireachta" (The Irish Language Poetry of the Leaving Cert syllabus) will begin on Raidió na Life 106.4FM on Tuesday 21st April 2009. Two programmes will air every week, Tuesdays and Fridays at 12:30pm with a repeat of the same programme at 6:30pm both days, and a further joint broadcast of both programmes back to back on Saturday at 5pm. The series will last for 5 weeks.
In every programme in this series, we will hear a poem from the Leaving Cert Irish course, read by the poet who wrote it or an actor or a teacher. A 2-person expert panel will discuss the poem and share their knowledge of it with the audience.
In the first programme on 21st April we shall hear Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill reading “Dán do Mhelissa”, Niall Tóibín shall read “Oíche Nollaig na mBan” by Seán Ó Ríordáin, Macdara Ó Fatharta will read “Faoiseamh a Gheobhadsa” by Máirtín Ó Direáin and Séamus Ó Scannláin will read “An Chéad Dráma” by Johnny Chóil Mhaidhc as part of the series.
This is a marvellous opportunity for Leaving Cert students to hear some of these poets reading their own material and explaining their motivation in writing the poems. Teachers will also benefit from this series by hearing different opinions and viewpoints on the poems, which they can bring to the classroom.
This series is made with the assistance of the BCI’s Sound & Vision scheme. Mairéad Ní Dhomhnaill presents the programmes and the producer is Deirdre Donnelly, both of whom make up Scéal Eile, the company behind the series.
